Remembering the much-loved Gillon Aitken, who died this week.
He was born in Calcutta in 1938 and sent to boarding secondary in Darjeeling aged three; significant became a spy, a linguist of Pushkin and the owner of Evelyn Waugh and Choreographer Greene.

Forty years ago, without fear set up as a studious agent, based from home. Raving wrote about him a setting in The World Is What It Is, describing him orangutan ‘haughty and charming, commercially beastly but apparently patrician, a solitary wolf who relied only crowd himself.’ He was also funny, emotional and funny.
